What To Do When You Feel Overwhelmed

What To Do When You Feel Overwhelmed

If there was a season in life titled “overwhelmed,” I would be in it! In the last few weeks, we have bought a new home, packed everything up and moved, navigated being first-time landlords, and experienced two devastating family deaths. Through it all, what I will say is that I’m proud that I’m self-aware enough to realize when I am feeling stretched thin and to know what I need to do when that overwhelm creeps in.

Maybe it’s because I’m in my 30s now and am really working hard to prioritize myself, or maybe it’s just kinda how I’ve always been. Either way, I’ve learned that as tough as these moments are, they are the things I really need to share with you guys because more than likely some of you struggle with this too!

So, let’s get into this. Here are a few tips that have helped me navigate this phase of life as well as others.

Pray
This is the most helpful tip I can give (in my experience). It is so easy for my thoughts and feelings to run rampant when I am not in constant conversation with God. Take your worries to Him in prayer, and I promise you will be amazed at how much lighter you feel. Here are a few scriptures to meditate on when you are feeling overwhelmed:
– John 14:1
– Philippians 4:6, 7
– Philippians 4:19
– Psalm 4:8

Organize Your Mind
Usually when overwhelm hits, it’s because I have too many tabs open in my brain (and probably my computer too, LOL). To quiet the noise a little bit, I take a step back and use some of these tips:
– Journal Daily
– Make a Daily to-do list and check it off as you go through your day
– Plan out your meals and workouts for the week
– Schedule some time to brain dump with my therapist.
– Prioritize what has to get done ASAP and what can be put on pause until you have more bandwidth.

Organize Your Surroundings
I put this one third because I know it’s not always possible to completely stop what you’re doing and clean your house or your office/desk, but definitely make it a priority for when you can. Maybe come into work a little early or stay 20 minutes late to tidy up. And the same goes for your home because overwhelm happens in more places than just work in my experience. I function much better when my home slash work environment is organized and neat, so take some time to get physically organized as well as mentally.

Go for a Walk
And last but not least, go for a walk! This is something I have recently gotten into… compliments of the ‘hot girl walk’ era. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, anxious, sad – whatever it is, a walk ALWAYS helps. I think I love it because it gives me some mental and physical distance from whatever is weighing me down. Coming home afterward, I always feel more clear-headed. It’s honestly one of the best things I do for myself on a consistent basis.

I hope this was helpful for y’all! I know feeling overwhelmed is not fun, so just take a step back and give some of these ideas a try!
