Creating a Work From Home Routine: Achieving Work-Life Balance in a Remote World

6 Tips for Creating a Productive Work from Home Routine

The pandemic has forced many of us to work from home (for years at this point), making it challenging to find a balance between work life, personal life and peace of mind. Both my husband and I have been working from home for the last 3 years and one of the things we had to figure out quickly was how to be intentional about our routine. Without a routine in place it's easy to lose track of time and find yourself working long hours or not being productive enough around the house. Therefore, creating a work from home routine is crucial for work-life balance. I have also found that the routine that worked for us a year ago no longer works for us now, which led me to writing this blog post. Here are some tips that I used when creating/revamping  my routine that will provide a balance between work and personal life.

Set a Schedule: Set up a work schedule that suits your work style and personal commitments. Ensure that you have clear work hours and stick to them. Let your team and family know when you will be available for work and when you need time to focus on personal life. I have found that letting my husband know when I will be working late, even from home, helps keep us on the same page when it comes to spending quality time during the week.

Create a Dedicated Workspace: Designate a specific area for work, where you can focus and eliminate distractions. Ensure that your workspace is comfortable and equipped with all the necessary tools and equipment you need to work. When I first set up my workspace it was a shared space with my husband, at first it was fun being “co-workers”. Fast forward to a year later and we now work in separate spaces which allows us to avoid interrupting each others conference calls and train of thoughts mid day.

Take Regular Breaks: Breaks are crucial for maintaining productivity and focus. Take short breaks throughout the day, stretch, and move around. Go for a walk, get some fresh air or do something you enjoy during your break time.

Create Boundaries: It’s easy to blur the lines between work and personal life while working from home. Set boundaries and stick to them. Avoid checking emails or working during personal time, and ensure that you are fully present with family and friends.

Stay Connected: Working from home can be isolating, making it crucial to stay connected with your community, friends, and family. Be intentional about joining social groups that force you to leave the house, setting plans with friends on the weekend and although I know home workouts have become so popular, I would encourage you to join a gym to ensure you are leaving the house daily if you WFH. This has been a game changer for me.

Review and Revise Your Routine: Review your routine regularly and make necessary adjustments. Evaluate what works and what doesn’t work and make changes accordingly. What you need in this season of life will be different from what you will need in the next, keep this in mind and don’t be shy about switching things up as needed.

Creating a work from home routine absolutely takes effort and dedication, but it’s essential for work-life balance and peace of mind . Remember to prioritize your work, take breaks, set boundaries, and stay connected. With a well thought out routine, you can achieve a work-life balance that provides both productivity and peace of mind.
