Tithing as Newlyweds: Our Financial Journey

Tithing is the cheat code.

As a newly married couple who decided to merge finances early on, one thing we have experienced time and time again in our marriage is the power of tithing. It may seem counterintuitive to give away a portion of your income, but we have truly found that it has brought us more abundance than we could have ever imagined.

As a newly married couple, merging finances can be one of the most challenging aspects of building a life together. My husband and I knew this going into marriage, and we decided to tackle it head-on shortly after we got engaged. One thing we included in our budget from day one was 10% of our income going towards tithing to our church. Making sure we included and never wavered on our tithes has proven to be one of the best financial decisions we have made thus far, although not always an easy one.

For those who may not be familiar, tithing is the act of giving 10% of your income to your place of worship or to those in need. Tithing is rooted in the Bible and is mentioned several times throughout both the Old and New Testaments. (Bible verses for reference: Malachi 3:10, Leviticus 27:30, Deuteronomy 14:22, Malachi 3:10, Matthew 23:23)

“Tithing is not a matter of money, really; it is a matter of faith – faith in God.”

While the act of tithing may seem daunting – trust me, I get it – that 10% is nothing to sneeze at, my husband and I have found it to be an even bigger blessing. Since tithing together, we have encountered times of financial uncertainty, such as tech layoffs and pay cuts. Regardless of what came our way, we continued to give our 10% without fail. I truly believe that the only reason we have never experienced financial struggle through it all is because of our faithfulness in tithing. Don’t get me wrong, we absolutely have/had savings, investments, and various financial safety nets in place that paid off during these times. However, when we look back, it still doesn’t explain the peace we had throughout this period.

I know talking about finances can seem taboo, but tithing is something I have always felt we don’t discuss enough with family and friends. We talk about stocks, investments, and various benefits, but the real cheat code to financial success in our house has been tithing. If you are a newly married couple or anyone looking to merge finances, I would encourage you to test God in tithing and see what blessings He has in store for you.

  1. This is so beautifully stated and I appreciate the openness in you all sharing. It definitely isn’t talked about enough when it is single handedly the most powerful tool we have in our arsenal for financial prosperity. Loved this!!!
